Junior Developer

We're looking for a curious, driven Junior Developer to join our team. zu is a Canadian digital agency with 30 years of experience building complex software for regulated industries with clients spanning government agencies, insurance providers, and healthcare organizations. Our clients depend on software that works, and our team takes that seriously at every level.

As a Junior Developer at zu, you’ll work on real client projects from day one, supported by senior developers and a structured mentorship environment. You’ll build your skills across our stack, contribute to well-defined features, and develop the habits that make for a great engineer long-term.

AI is embedded in how we work and we’re looking for people who share that curiosity. This is an entry-level role designed for someone eager to grow their craft in a team that takes quality seriously.

What You’ll Do

  • Complete well-scoped development tasks with guidance from senior team members
  • Learn and apply zu’s development standards, tooling, and deployment workflows
  • Write clean, tested code and participate in code review
  • Communicate task status clearly and flag blockers early
  • Contribute to documentation and internal knowledge-sharing
  • Develop familiarity with our technology stack and client project structures
  • Work in a fast paced collaborative environment

What You Bring

  • Foundational knowledge of computer science concepts and at least one programming language
  • A team player who can work under tight deadlines, sometimes balancing multiple streams of work
  • Exposure to version control (Git), testing practices, and basic web development
  • Strong communicator who asks good questions and accepts feedback well
  • Self-directed learner who makes steady progress without needing constant redirection
  • Comfortable using AI tools (Copilot, Claude, etc.) as part of your development workflow, with an understanding that you own the quality of what you ship

Bonus Skills

  • Coursework or project experience with PHP, JavaScript, or Symfony/Drupal

How You’ll Grow

  • Build real-world experience across multiple client projects and technology stacks
  • Develop depth in one or more areas of our codebase with direct mentorship from senior developers
  • Develop an understanding of the product context behind your work — the client’s constraints, the user’s needs, and how technical decisions connect to business outcomes
  • Progress toward Developer II or Senior Developer 1 based on our career ladder framework
